One long-standing tradition in anticipation of each annual Fairport, NY* summer Canal Days festival is a popular official festival poster contest used to promote the entire season. As the 2016 selection I was fortunate to receive invitations to visit special youth classes over the summer. I had given out scores of free “coloring book” black and white prints of the design during the festival (it occurred to me while designing the majority of the poster in Adobe Illustrator vector art!).
Local organizers for the youth summer classes loved the idea for getting kids involved in the festival and parents involved with the community. They invited me to visit their classes. I spoke on the value of art for expression, for civics, and opportunities for a career. And then best of all, we colored together.
